Some Children and the Myth of “Effort Always Leads to Success”
In some countries, children are often told that if they work hard enough, they can achieve anything they want. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving this message to children?
一部の国では、「一生懸命努力すれば、どんなことでも達成できる」と子どもたちに教えられることがあります。このようなメッセージを子どもに与えることの利点と欠点を論じなさい。

Some children are told that trying hard enough will always lead to achievement. Although giving this message to children is not free of benefits, the disadvantages should not be neglected.

It is clearly beneficial for children to believe in themselves. Positive personality traits, such as confidence, can develop in childhood, and parents and teachers can play a significant role in fostering these traits. Telling children that they have what it takes to achieve their goals can boost confidence, which is essential in adulthood. Adults lacking confidence may struggle to find a good career, take risks, or make big life changes. A sense of inability to improve may even lead to depression. Thus, parents should do what they can to make children as confident as possible.

This can damage self-esteem, which is counterproductive.
しかし、「努力さえすれば何でもできる」と教えることにはリスクがあります。なぜなら、誰もがすべての分野で得意というわけではなく、失敗は避けられないからです。努力が必ず報われると信じている子どもは、失敗したときに「自分の努力が足りなかった」「自分は他の人より能力がない」と感じてしまうかもしれません。これは自尊心を傷つけ、逆効果となることがあります。
