Some Children and the Myth of “Effort Always Leads to Success”
In some countries, children are often told that if they work hard enough, they can achieve anything they want. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving this message to children?
Introduction
Some children are told that trying hard enough will always lead to achievement. Although giving this message to children is not free of benefits, the disadvantages should not be neglected.
Benefits of Encouraging Children
It is clearly beneficial for children to believe in themselves. Positive personality traits, such as confidence, can develop in childhood, and parents and teachers can play a significant role in fostering these traits. Telling children that they have what it takes to achieve their goals can boost confidence, which is essential in adulthood. Adults lacking confidence may struggle to find a good career, take risks, or make big life changes. A sense of inability to improve may even lead to depression. Thus, parents should do what they can to make children as confident as possible.
Potential Drawbacks of Overstating Effort
However, parents run a risk when telling children “anything” is possible with enough effort. Failure is inevitable because no one is good at everything. If children believe their efforts must always pay off, they may feel inadequate when facing failure, thinking they have not worked hard enough or are not as capable as others. This can damage self-esteem, which is counterproductive.
Conclusion / Personal Opinion
In my opinion, it is better to tell children that many dreams can be realized through hard work, but they should not expect that effort always guarantees success.
