Will Printed Books and Newspapers Be Replaced by Online Reading?
Introduction
While it is sometimes believed that printed books and newspapers will not be used in the future anymore, I disagree with this view and think there will still be certain people who would prefer to read printed materials.
Merits of Reading Online
Admittedly, reading online has its merits. Firstly, it is usually free, and as a result, it makes sense for those who read a lot to do most of their readings online. It would probably be too expensive if they bought anything they liked to read in print. Secondly, what you can access online is much wider than what is available in a normal, local bookstore, which means that we may not sometimes even have the chance of finding what we search for in print. For these two reasons, it is predictable that the popularity of reading online will increase in the future.
Reasons People Will Still Prefer Printed Materials
However, it seems certain that some people will still buy printed books and newspapers in the future. First, there are some individuals who get a headache or sore eyes when they read from a screen for a while. Because of health concerns, these types of people will probably continue to read printed materials, especially if they have to read a lot. Another group who are unlikely to abandon printed materials are those who enjoy reading and buying books and newspapers. They may find the smell of the papers of a new book pleasurable, or they may find pleasure in going to a bookstore, searching for a great book and purchasing it. Thus, it seems unlikely that everybody will completely lose interest in printed books and newspapers in the future.
Conclusion
To summarize, although there are clear advantages for reading online, it is hard to imagine it will be the only way of reading in the future.
